SA prepare for Pandas – Wanted HVAC contractors

Panda love.

When two pandas, Wang Wang and Funi, arrive from China’s Szechwan province in September for a ten year stint at the South Australian Zoo they’ll be bringing something else with them.

Their climate.

Adelaide, where the temperature is often well over 40º in summer, couldn’t be more different to the mist-shrouded ravines, gullies and mountains of central China where pandas come from. But that’s the climate, a team of HVAC-R engineers are working to recreate in the 125 year old zoo. They’re using air conditioning and even refrigerating the rocks within the enclosure to make the pandas feel right at home.

And the pandas will need to feel relaxed. The zoo’s hoping they’ll mate, and that at least a couple of panda cubs will be born during their stay. But pandas are fickle breeders. (Bao Bao, the oldest male panda in captivity, has been in a Berlin zoo for 25 years and has never reproduced.) Which simply confirms something every HVAC worker knows: love can’t flourish without good air conditioning.
