Man’s best friend is now one
of man’s best tax deductions
According to the Australian Tax Office, tradies’ dogs can be claimed as a legal tax deduction.
You can now claim expenses such as vet and pet food bills as a legitimate deduction, so long as your dog helped with work or was connected to any type of income generation. Sheep dogs qualify for obvious reasons, but if your dog guards tools in the back of your ute it’s just as eligible. As the ATO puts it, deductions can be claimed ‘provided you can show your pet is used in the course of income production, for instance as workhorses, guard or guide dogs, or sheep herders’.
For further information, speak to your financial advisor or accountant. They are sure to tell you that there are no specific rules on which pets qualify for tax breaks, though we suspect that claiming a Chihuahua as a guard dog might be pushing things a bit.
