MEPS ensure that appliances manufactured or imported into Australia meet the minimum energy performance as specified by the relevant Australian Standard. Growing environmental concern has seen constant revision to regulations.
New MEPS and energy labelling requirements for air conditioners with a cooling output up to 65kW will come into action on April 1, 2010.
Other changes will include an upgrade of MEPS levels for cooling with the inclusion of standby power and other non-operational power into the MEPS limits and the inclusion of mandatory power factor.
ERLs

Research has shown that the ratings are a key factor in consumer purchasing decisions. As a result, products at the higher end of the energy rating scale, such as air conditioners, are now subject to a new 10 star system.
