Counterfeit refrigerants a cause for concern
Leading refrigerant manufacturer, DuPont Refrigerants, has claimed that dangerous R22 and R134a counterfeits have flooded the Middle Eastern market.
DuPont Business Manager Pascal Faidy said the counterfeits are harmful to the environment and hazardous to individuals.
“They are not only flammable and thus dangerous for those working directly with the refrigerant, but they contain ozone-depleting substances such as R12 and therefore do not support the phase-out of CFCs,” Mr Faidy said. “We have witnessed cases where the use of such counterfeits has damaged components in air conditioning systems.”
Many of the counterfeit refrigerants are believed to have been manufactured in Asia and sent to the Middle East given the region’s dependence on R22 and R134a for use in their air-conditioning systems.
The existence of phony R22 refrigerants (that produces the less ozone-depleting compound HCFC) is a major concern.
R22 components were intended as a transitional replacement to CFC producing refrigerants following the ratification of the Montreal Protocol to combat ozone depletion.
DuPont claims the counterfeited products don’t meet industry standards. This news is certain to be a wakeup call to the Australian refrigerant market which continues to feel the effects of the Montreal Protocol.
