Ban on pre-charged air conditioning equipment

Ban on pre-charged air conditioning equipment

New laws governing the import of pre-charged air conditioning equipment will come into effect on 1 July, 2010.

Among the new restrictions imposed will be the ban on the importation of most air-conditioning equipment pre-charged with HCFC. The ban brings Australia into line with other countries that have prohibited, or are in the process of prohibiting, the import of HCFC pre-charged equipment including Indonesia, most European Nations and the USA.

All 2010-2011 pre-charged equipment licences will be subject to a condition that prohibits the import of air conditioning equipment pre-charged with HCFC from July unless the equipment –

  • Is a chiller charged with HCFC123
  • Is a replacement part of existing HCFC equipment. (This does not include a complete or substantially complete indoor or outdoor unit of a split-system air conditioner)
  • Comprises high-static ducted split-system components.

The ban from 1 July, 2010 doesn’t remove the need to obtain a licence for importing HCFC pre-charged equipment between 1 January, 2010 until the end of June, 2010. This ban does not affect refrigeration equipment.
