It’s official—your bathroom renovation dreams are about to come true.
The end result is the exciting part; heated floors, glistening tapware, maybe a luxurious bath? There’s a lot of decisions that need to be made along the way to create a bathroom that fits your unique vision and needs. That’s why we sat down with bathroom expert Sam Iliopoulos from Melbourne’s Pioneering Bathroom Designs to take us through his steps to achieving Bathroom Happiness during the renovation process.
With Instagram, Pinterest and other platforms at our fingertips, we’re provided with a constant source of bathroom inspiration at any time of the day. We asked Sam how he cuts through the noise when establishing and nailing a client’s style.
“Social media is the biggest source for ideas… creating your own mood board is a great visual and fun place to start. From there, the key is to start exploring showrooms and speaking with your designer and builder to help you dive deeper and fully define your vision.”
With a smorgasbord of bathroom products to choose from, there’s a few things you can do to make it easier to choose what’s right for you. “Firstly, it’s important to set a budget to work towards, find you inspiration and stay on track. Understand the design you’re after, is it Scandinavian, industrial or modern? Start exploring these products to maximise your bathroom experience,” Sam suggests.
The planning stages of a bathroom build are crucial. Sam proposes the best way to establish a cohesive layout is to find a central point.
"There has to be a main focal point in the room, whether it’s a skylight, vanity or freestanding bath. Choose something that draw the eye and ties the room together."
A popular choice for a bathroom feature, if you have space, is a luxurious freestanding bath. Check out the array of luxurious hotel inspired designs by Kado.
Having a dynamic team of trades will allow you to sleep easy at night. Selecting the right builders, plumbers and sparkies is simple, says Sam. “Make sure they have a good reputation, check they are a licensed builder, and that they have certified trades. Look for past projects and referrals, these are all traits of a reliable team.”
If you’re looking for vast array of projects and the teams behind them, the Reece Project Inspiration Gallery is a great place to start.
Once the project is in full swing and your vision starts to come together, the next step is to manage your team of trades and the project itself. “If you choose to manage the project yourself, it is important to have a good understanding of the building process. Have you your building materials ready and be sure to communicate clearly with your trades to stay on track,” advises Sam.
Now comes the fun part. Putting the final touches on your bathroom should be a reflection of you.
"Introduce plants and pops of colour through towel and bathmats. This always helps change the look and feel of the bathroom to reflect your personal style and taste."
And remember; your personal style over the years will change, so this is a great way to give a room a refresh. If you’re looking to resell the home in the future, it will allow future homeowners to make the space their own.
A bathroom renovation is all about reinvigorating a space to create somewhere you want to spend time and relax, especially as we spend more time at home. Sam believes,
“a bathroom should be a room in your home where you can feel comfortable in your own personal style and taste. Enjoy the process and the end result equally—your Bathroom Happiness is a reflection of you.”
